Why should children take Cambridge exams?
Cambridge English Qualifications are designed for each age group, letting children experience internationally benchmarked assessment aligned with the CEFR without pressure. Each exam is a clear milestone that shows parents exactly where their child stands on the English learning journey and motivates the child to reach the next goal.
Stage 1: Cambridge YLE – Starters, Movers, Flyers
The three Young Learners English (YLE) exams are for primary students. Starters (Pre A1) suits children aged 7–9 with basic foundations; Movers (A1) is for ages 9–11; and Flyers (A2) for ages 11–13. YLE has no pass or fail — results are given as shields (up to 15 across three skills), so children always receive positive recognition after the test.
Stage 2: A2 Key (KET) and B1 Preliminary (PET)
After Flyers, children move on to certificates with greater academic weight. A2 Key (KET) confirms a child can use English in familiar situations, suitable for students aged 13–15. B1 Preliminary (PET) proves solid foundations and readiness for bigger goals such as IELTS. Many secondary and high schools now give admission priority to students holding KET or PET certificates.
The suggested pathway at AVS
At AVS, children build their base with the Everybody Up series before entering dedicated exam classes: Cambridge Starters (3 months), Movers (3 months), Flyers (3 months), then KET and PET (3–4 months each). Before every exam, students sit full Cambridge-standard mock tests and receive detailed skill-by-skill feedback.
Advice for parents
Do not chase speed — let your child take each exam only when truly ready. A successful exam nurtures confidence, while an exam beyond their level can make children fear learning. Contact AVS for a free placement test and personalised roadmap advice.
